    This workshop will discuss the following topics

    1. An introduction to Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods: we provide an overview of quantitative (observation and surveys and qualitative methodologies (in-depth interviews and focus groups) in the social sciences. We discuss when to use to use a quantitative approach as opposed to a qualitative approach and when to use mixed methods.  We will also discuss sampling techniques and how to determine a sample size.   We will discuss the importance of validating a survey and the different steps involved in validating a survey. This workshop will also present different examples of qualitative research projects.
    2. Interviews and Focus Groups: we provide a description of when and how to use interviews and focus groups in research studies. We will provide examples of interview and focus group guides, discuss logistics when planning interviews and focus groups, discuss interview and facilitation skills, and provide opportunities for participants to practice conducting interviews and focus groups in small groups.
    3. Coding and Data Analysis: we describe the management and analysis of qualitative data. We practice coding and analyzing qualitative data by hand.
    Learning Objectives:

    At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

    Day 1: Quantitative Research

    • Discuss research inquiry: selecting the research problem and developing a research hypothesis).
    • Describe quantitative research designs (observation and survey studies)
    • Describe the approach to developing questions in surveys
    • Discuss potential errors in quantitative research
    • Discuss sampling methods and sample size calculation
    • Describe how to validate a survey
    • Perform hands on application: Developing questionnaires

    Days 2 and 3: Qualitative Research

    • Discuss methods of qualitative research: Interviewing, and focus group discussions
    • Describe when to use surveys and focus groups
    • Hands-on experience with performing in-depth interviews and focus groups
    • Discuss methods of coding
    • Perform coding and developing themes
